Medieval Misericord of griffin catching a rabbit and another popping down the hole. This image is thought to have inspired Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice in Wonderland.

Student designing stained glass window during Medieval Art Pilgrimage

In order to make a visit to Ripon Cathedral more exciting for children, a group of volunteers has designed an Angels and Dragon Trail which is available free of charge at the Welcome Desk. This family trail leaflet is suitable for children up to 7 years of age. The Griff the Gargoyle Trail leaflet,  for families and children aged 7 - 14, is now available in the Cathedral Gift Shop for 50 pence. Follow Griff around the Cathedral and see if you can spot his friends. Take the leaflet home and complete the challenges on the other side of the trail map.

The Heritage Project also makes curriculum linked workshops available to schools for the following subjects (for all key stages):

  • History (Middle Ages, Tudors, Victorians, WWI)
  • Design and Technology (memorials design and history of style)
  • Art (using the woodcarvings and stained glass windows as a resource)
  • Health and Social Care (assisting visually disabled people on the sensory tour)

Other activities, such as brass rubbing, photography, handbell ringing, archaeology ... are available for community groups free of charge on request.
