Music & Services at Ripon Cathedral

Prayer and the worship of God are at the centre of the Cathedral's mission. This page tells you more about the regular services that take place here, on Sundays and throughout the week. Much - though by no means all - of our worship involves singing and music, which is why these pages also have information about the Cathedral Choirs, the Music Department and more.

Sunday is the traditional day for going to church, and for most people the main Sunday service will be the Eucharist, whether a said service at 8am or the Sung Eucharist at 10.30.

Sunday Services

On Sundays, the pattern of services is as follows. The 8am Eucharist is a said service using traditional language based on the Book of Common Prayer. A sermon is preached.

Morning Prayer, or Mattins, takes place at 9.30am. Usually this is a simple said service, following the Book of Common Prayer. Approximately once a month, on the first Sunday, the Choir sing the traditional service of Choral Mattins. Details can be found in the Music List.

The principal Sunday Service is the Sung Eucharist at 10.30am. Usually this is sung by the Cathedral Choir, or during the holidays by a visiting choir. On the first Sunday of the month, the Cathedral Music Group usually lead the service, which typically has a more informal style.

At 12.30 there is a celebration of Holy Communion according to the rite of the Book of Common Prayer.

Evensong at 5.30pm completes the day. A sermon is preached at Evensong on a Sunday.

Please see the Music List for further details.

The Weekday Services at the Cathedral

The everyday life of the Cathedral revolves around the daily offices of morning and evening prayer, or Evensong. This anchors the community in its central work of prayer and provides the pattern for all that we do. In addition, the Eucharist is celebrated at least once a day.

Morning and Evening Prayer

The daily office of Morning Prayer is usually said in the Choir, according to the order of service in Common Worship.

All are welcome to join us for this time of quietness and reflection at the start of the day.

Evening Prayer is said or sung every day in the Cathedral, according to the order of service in the Book of Common Prayer. On weekdays, these services are at 6pm (5.30pm at weekends). On Sundays a sermon is preached.

Please see the Music List for details.

The Eucharist

The Eucharist is celebrated every day in the Cathedral. On weekdays there is a service at 9am, with additional services at 11am on Wednesday and 12 noon on Friday.

The order of service is from Common Worship, with a celebration according to the rite of the Book of Common Prayer on Wednesday at 11am.
