Work has started to rewire and relight the Cathedral. The project will take six months to complete and will cost in the region of £700,000.  We have been generously supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. To date we have raised £50,000 from individuals and Charitable Trusts. We are now seeking further support to raise the balance of the project of £200,000.

In undertaking the renewal of the wiring and the new lighting design for Ripon Cathedral, the matter of environmental sustainability has been considered in detail at all stages of the project. Low energy light sources will be used wherever possible throughout the Cathedral.

A three year programme of Heritage events and activities is now under way giving visitors and users of the Cathedral the opportunity to learn more about the history of the building.  Once the re-lighting is complete the Cathedral will be revealed in a new light.

For centuries the Treasures of Ripon Cathedral have been dimly lit. Important parts of the building,which give pleasure to thousands of people,are obscured from view because of poor lighting.

Installation of electricity in the early 20th Century was haphazard and current wiring fails today's safety standards.

Ripon Cathedral is a complex medieval building and this is our opportunity to show it in a new light. A safe wiring system and energy efficient lighing will transform the Cathedral into one that meets the needs of the 21st Century.

Improved lighting will reveal the outstanding quality of the stonework, the memorials, the choir stalls, the sacred silver, the ironwork, St Wilfrid's Crypt and the beauty of the architecture.
