Ripon Cathedral Stitchers
The Stitchers are a group of around
90 keen needleworkers who - as their name implies - have
carried out a variety of sewing projects for the Cathedral.
Perhaps the biggest project was
the Millennium Seat Cushions, a set of cushions designed
to fit the stone seat which runs around the walls of the
Nave.
This 4-year project started in 1999
and the cushions were finally dedicated in 2003. Designed
to show every aspect of Ripon life, the cushions are now
permanently on display in the Cathedral.
The project was managed by Connie
Birkinshaw. The cushions were designed by Marian Thew and
there were two advisors, historian Mike Younge and artist
Alan Matthews.
Since then the Stitchers have created
a magnificant set of 8 kneelers for the High Altar in the
Choir.
Ideas for new projects are always
welcome. Please contact Connie Birkinshaw through the Cathedral
Office.
