A candle was lit as a symbol of hope during a service of Holy Communion to dedicate the re-ordered Chapel of the Holy Spirit.
The changes, which allow wheelchair users to access the altar, were made thanks to a legacy from Dr Claire Hobbs, a member of the cathedral community, who herself used a wheelchair.
We gave thanks for her generosity and for her life and ministry. We also remembered before God all those who have died.
Andrew Newton, who campaigns for better access for those who use wheelchairs, was one of the worshippers at the service. Andrew said: “I am delighted that the cathedral is putting inclusivity at the forefront of its thinking and has re-ordered the Holy Spirit Chapel so that services can be presided over by a priest in a wheelchair.”
