An exciting new vocal ensemble, Morales Consort, comes to the cathedral for Thursday’s free lunchtime concert!

Directed by Matt Lennox, one of the lay clerks (adult singers) of Ripon Cathedral Choir and featuring some other familiar faces, the consort specialises in some of the most beautiful, often neglected, pieces of sacred music from 16th and 17th century Europe – its forte being unaccompanied polyphony, where several different melodies are sung at the same time.

As well as singing more familiar repertoire, its mission is to seek out and present interesting pieces that audiences are less likely to have encountered before.

Morales Consort’s six professional singers come not only from English cathedral choirs but also from professional opera companies and regularly feature as soloists with choral societies and choirs across the North. Their next recital will be at Hexham Abbey in June.

Thursday’s concert begins at 1pm, with hot drinks from 12.30pm.
