The performance of An English Passion, a work based on St Matthew’s Gospel, which was to have been performed at Ripon Cathedral on March 29 has been postponed, due to the current situation.

The score, to have been sung by the Clothworkers’ Consort from Leeds University, has been composed by Philip Wilby, Emeritus Professor and Head of Composition. The first performance at Wells Cathedral was remarkable in that here was no applause at the end, just a highly reflective silence, people had been so moved.

The arrangement of the words of the narrative from St Matthew’s Gospel is by Richard Cooper, Canon Emeritus of Ripon Cathedral, a former chaplain to the Queen.

We hope that An English Passion will be performed on Passion Sunday next year.

Philip Wilby’s ‘An English Passion’ is published by the Royal School of Church Music
