With the arrival of the UCI World Cycling Championships Ripon Together is challenging Riponians to get on their bikes and cycle to the moon and back – on average about 238,855 miles (384,400 km)!
‘Ripon Cycling Together’ sees a series of events including workshops, triathlons and exhibitions, culminating in the races coming through Ripon in September.
The cathedral’s forecourt played host to bike tuneup sessions and Bygone Bikes during the launch event on Saturday June 29 whilst the cathedral itself hosted a new photographic exhibition called ‘On yer bike’, documenting the beautiful views of our area and our county’s growing interest in cycling.
The Dean of Ripon, the Very Reverend John Dobson, DL, said: “As chair of Ripon Together, I can speak for all members in saying that we are keen to use every opportunity to bring together people and groups within Ripon to strengthen our community. This year, cycling gives us yet another great reason to unite in a creative way that is appealing to residents and visitors. As Dean of Ripon, I am delighted that the cathedral is helping to give a lead with this imaginative project, not least in hosting the wonderful photographic exhibition, On Yer Bike.”
Anyone can log their miles and contribute to Ripon’s efforts to get to the moon (and back) before September. Whether your bike is a carbon fibre affair or an exercise bike in the spare room, it will all count towards the final count. Ripon Cathedral is also hosting a static bike so, even if you don’t have a set of wheels, you can contribute to the tally. If you don’t want to go to the hassle of downloading the app, you can fill out this form to log your miles – link.
