This month saw the welcome return of our choristers after a seven month absence from sung worship! Our senior choristers sang evensong on Sunday Oct 11 (as featured on BBC Radio York and BBC Tees) – and the following Wednesday it was the turn of our junior choristers, who joined the lay clerks (adult singers) for evensong.
Due to COVID restrictions on numbers the choristers have had to be split in this unusual way; both groups sang beautifully and deserved the rounds of applause they received!
The juniors sang in school uniforms due to the tricky nature of putting on a cassock and having to do so without help because of social distancing!
Our lay clerks returned in September as the choristers resumed ‘actual’ rehearsals after a Summer of virtual rehearsals on Zoom.
As our Canon Succentor, Rev Dan Sladden, said in his sermon on the 11th – the break in sung worship due to the COVID pandemic was only the second in the cathedral’s long (over 1300 year) history – the first being the Civil War!
