Thursday lunchtime free live concerts have made a welcome comeback for the first time since March 2020!
Assistant Director of Music Tim Harper delighted the audience with a piano recital to kick off the series.
Our Interim Director of Music and world class organist Peter Wright gave an organ recital, as featured on BBC Radio York, and Tim and Peter (pictured left) performed a brilliant piano duet! Highlights included the Dolly Suite by Fauré, featuring the signature tune to Listen with Mother!
Other series highlights include a performance by the world famous Black Dyke Band’s Principal Trombonist, Dr Brett Baker and the Northumbrian duo The Brothers Gillespie. An on-line concert by Tim Harper can also be accessed via our Facebook page and YouTube channel
Peter explained: “The lunchtime concerts are a free gift to the community, and visitors, to hear a wide variety of music in the superb architectural and acoustic surroundings of Ripon Cathedral. Some plan to come, others stumble upon them by accident, but audience members frequently comment on the pleasure and refreshment they experience by attending. The next concert (21st October) will be an organ recital given by our brilliant new Assistant Organist, Shaun Turnbull. This will be a wonderful opportunity to savour Shaun’s talents, and the fine instrument in the cathedral which is as effective in concert repertoire as in accompanying cathedral services.”
The cathedral continues to cope with the financial impact of COVID and you are welcome to make a donation at the donation points or on-line (find further details of concerts and how to donate at www.riponcathedral.org.uk).
Concerts are in the nave, to maintain social distancing (no recording or streaming.) Hot drinks and packaged biscuits will be served from 12.30pm (the audience is welcome to bring in cold sandwiches.) The concerts begin at 1pm.
